DEER #2

I finished this between classes today. Could have taken a nap, but oh well. I'm glad it's finished, now only more deer drawing remains...

Also, I'd like to give a shout out to one my followers, Reed "Deer" Thompson. This one's for you bro!

Not quite sure...

I started this a couple months ago, and have recently come back to it. That seems to happen fairly often with my work for some reason. It's still untitled and only about 40% complete at the moment, but there's enough there to get a general feel for what the completed illustration will look like.

As you can see, I've incorporated the same type of lines from an earlier piece in order to create an organic or biological feeling. I've also added a few characters (beetle and the fruit looking guys) to further that feeling.

I'm also trying to include some hard, mechanical geometric shapes to contrast the organic aspects. I believe the idea for this comes from how technology is becoming more and more essential to humanity as time goes on. I'm looking forward to posting the finished product!
Update: 1/21/10
I've been hard at work, spreading my time out over various projects. For this project, I've selected my color scheme and started the final stage. I chose these colors somewhat along the lines of a tetradic color scheme. I thought that because the main idea of the composition was about the contrast between technology and nature, I should strengthen that idea with the colors. I chose two hotter colors for the background and mechanical-like areas, and two cooler blue/green colors for the biological things. Should be finished soon!

Notes

This is a page from my sketchbook. Recently, I started bringing it to class with me and taking notes in it. This allows me to benefit from attending the class while simultaneously practicing my drawing technique and refining my personal style.

In this case, I used the topic of the lecture (Parable of the Net) as a starting point for my drawing, and tried to come up with some new imagery that corresponded to ideas from that lecture.

More to come soon!

12/22

I haven't posted in a while due to finals week. Now that it's over with, I figured I should post my newest efforts.

My sister asked for deer themed art for my nephew's room, so that's where most of the inspiration for this came from.

A little info on the pictures:
the first one came directly from my sketchbook, pretty loose and unrefined, but that's what Photoshop is for, right? Anyway, the middle picture is me picking out what background lines I wanted to keep and checking out some different colors. I switched up the colors a bit in the last picture, and also started to subtly overlap some lines just to spice things up. I'd say overall I'm about 43% done, and will hopefully have everything finished within a few more days.

Finally!

This piece took me about two whole months to finish, so finally being able to see it completed has been very rewarding for me. It was very fun to get away from my usual routine of producing cartoon style art and try out a new style. My motivation for this drawing came mostly from my faith and my family/friends, and the realization of how integrated the two really are.

I'm hoping to have some more art ready to post in the next couple weeks.

DEER

Nothing too fancy for my first post. Just a little something for all the deer enthusiasts out there. More to come after Thanksgiving!
