I finally got a Wacom tablet. I'm still not comfortable with it, but I had a great time playing around with different brushes and getting used to it in general. I made a sort of watercolor looking brush, and attempted to paint my nephew. He's the man. More to come.

Totem Pole Update

This is a picture of a rough draft for a t-shirt design and short animation. Right now, there are five colors being used, three browns and two greens. I'm playing around with the idea of including two birds on top of the antlers, depicting their beaks on either side of the green orb on top, encircling it and thereby matching the symmetry of the rest of the design. Right now, I'm still debating between creating the birds based off of a swallow-like or hawk-like bird to fill that role. Hawks have a certain aggression/attitude to them that would fit nicely with the rest of the piece, but swallows have beaks that are much better suited to fitting the shape, so I'll have to come to terms with that problem before I'm able to finalize the design.

For the t-shirt, I plan on including some detailed line work surrounding the totem pole. It will most likely surround the design in the picture, specifically to extend the design unto the sleeves, upper neck region, and bottom portion of the t-shirt.

I've always liked wearing zip-up hoodies with an interesting t-shirt underneath, so I'm planning the t-shirt side of this idea according to my own personal style. The strongest parts of the design will still be able to seen even while wearing a hoodie over top of it. I can't wait to have this idea finished and printed!

Update: I've decided to use a hawk style bird, and abstract the beak to make it fit the design. Using a different species of bird would have been easier, but this method not only meshes better with the rest of the design, but reinforces it.

bird update

Progress has been very slow with the kung fu bird, but it's getting close. Here's where it's at right now.

The Road is one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

This is a Bruce Lee inspired bird. Still in the early stages of development.

This is a drawing I did a few months ago. I haven't gotten around to coloring it yet, although I have chosen my color scheme for it already. Believe it or not, this is actually another deer drawing. I filled the page with deer silhouettes, then went into the silhouettes and added more lines based on how light falls on a deer. The darker the area of the deer, the more intricate and dense the lines are in that area. I'm excited to pick this back up and get it colored!

Outsider Art, Oil Painting

This is my second painting.  One thing I'm starting to realize about my work is that I enjoy projecting on it through titles.  This one is called "No skin off your ass."   I welcome any sort of feedback.

This is a quick drawing I did over the weekend. Not sure what its final destiny is, but right now I'm thinking about revising the character a little. It kind of looks like an alien, but I wanted it to look more like a reptile of some sort, or an insect?

I asked my roommate for some feedback and I was given a one word response, "Meditation." Interesting. More to come!

DEER #2

I finished this between classes today. Could have taken a nap, but oh well. I'm glad it's finished, now only more deer drawing remains...

Also, I'd like to give a shout out to one my followers, Reed "Deer" Thompson. This one's for you bro!

Not quite sure...

I started this a couple months ago, and have recently come back to it. That seems to happen fairly often with my work for some reason. It's still untitled and only about 40% complete at the moment, but there's enough there to get a general feel for what the completed illustration will look like.

As you can see, I've incorporated the same type of lines from an earlier piece in order to create an organic or biological feeling. I've also added a few characters (beetle and the fruit looking guys) to further that feeling.

I'm also trying to include some hard, mechanical geometric shapes to contrast the organic aspects. I believe the idea for this comes from how technology is becoming more and more essential to humanity as time goes on. I'm looking forward to posting the finished product!
Update: 1/21/10
I've been hard at work, spreading my time out over various projects. For this project, I've selected my color scheme and started the final stage. I chose these colors somewhat along the lines of a tetradic color scheme. I thought that because the main idea of the composition was about the contrast between technology and nature, I should strengthen that idea with the colors. I chose two hotter colors for the background and mechanical-like areas, and two cooler blue/green colors for the biological things. Should be finished soon!

Notes

This is a page from my sketchbook. Recently, I started bringing it to class with me and taking notes in it. This allows me to benefit from attending the class while simultaneously practicing my drawing technique and refining my personal style.

In this case, I used the topic of the lecture (Parable of the Net) as a starting point for my drawing, and tried to come up with some new imagery that corresponded to ideas from that lecture.

More to come soon!
